We often come across a cross stitch masterpiece at a friend’s place or some relative’s house and marvel at it. Cross stitch embroidery is nothing but the needlework art of making a series of “X’s” and following a design. Discussed further are the basics of cross stitch embroidery.
Why go for cross stitching?
Cross stitching unlike other pastimes is not very expensive and most importantly at the end of it you create a design or a masterpiece that you can have to keep it. Beginner’s kit is inexpensive and even freshers can create beautiful designs. One can create cross stitch work even while watching T. V as this is a portable hobby. Besides cross stitch works are a good choice when you have to gift it to your children or friends. This hobby can be pursued in weather conditions like snow or winter which forbade going out or playing outdoor games.
Do’s & Don’ts while cross stitching
For beginners it is advisable to buy a cross stitch kit. This kit contains a instruction manual, a cross stitch chart, stranded cotton thread and a fabric to stitch on. The instructions are easy to follow and help to create the stitch as per the illustrated design. Fabric cloth is usually Aida as it is easier to start on such a cloth which has strands bunched together to form squares which helps the beginner to easily decide where to place the needle. If you are just beginning to learn cross stitch embroidery, you can start with simple designs and less colour changes.
Read the instructions thoroughly before starting the design. Iron the cloth that you are using if it has creases. Next find the center of the cloth by folding it half vertically and then horizontally. One can also use the embroidery hoop to ease the needlework. Also ascertain that the color of threads do not fade out. If so, then dowse them in cold water and same quantity of vinegar, now remove the excess fluid and hang the thread to dry. It is always better to opt for colorfast threads. Usually a tapestry needle is used which has a large eye and blunt point.
How to cross stitch?
The most basic way to start a cross stitch is by stitching a line of half crosses or the slanting lines (///) and then work back to complete the cross with the other half lines (\\\). Alternately you can also complete one cross and then go for other. However it is important to maintain consistency in the design.
